Reader
Contact details:
I received my PhD in social and clinical psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992, and my interests have straddled the two fields ever since. My research and writing have several main strands:
- Lay conceptions of human nature, including the processes of subtle dehumanisation by which humanness is attributed in interpersonal and intergroup perception.
- Psychological essentialism, specifically people's beliefs about the underlying nature of social categories and personality traits, and their implications for stereotyping and prejudice.
- Relational models theory, developed by Alan P. Fiske, which proposes that there are four fundamental models that govern human social cognition and behaviour;
- Lay conceptions of mental disorder, developing a theoretical model of the cognitive bases of these understandings.
- Psychiatric classification, particularly the application of taxometric methods for testing between categorical and dimensional models of mental disorders.
