Isla Carboon
PhD Graduate 07
Senior Research Officer, Victoria Police

While she was a PhD candidate at the School, Isla served as the Editor of CyberPsych, a weekly e-newsletter for graduate students, staff and affiliates of the Department of Psychology. Isla's research thesis is on "A longitudinal study of psychological adjustment to a haematological malignancy: The role of meaning-based coping." Isla is now working as a Senior Research Officer with the Victoria Police.

"Psychology is an incredibly diverse study area that offers a wealth of career prospects.  The demand for psychology graduates is growing rapidly as business recognises the value of our skill base in a diverse range of professional roles.

Studying at Melbourne has offered me a range of opportunities to enrich my research training, including a 3-month University funded visit to New York to work on my PhD with international specialists.

My PhD research examines how the personal beliefs of people with cancer impact their emotional adjustment. The findings are useful not only for psychologists but also for the medical professionals treating these people as well. It is important to me that my research is of benefit to others."
