Postgraduate Colloquium

What topics are you interested in? What skills are you lacking?

-- The Department of Psychology Postgraduate Colloquia

Aims

Academically, the Postgraduate Colloquia are in place to provide Melbourne University Postgraduate students with the information they want or need as part of your ongoing professional development. Socially, they exist as a forum for students to informally meet and support each other.

The Colloquia Committee exists to organise these seminars and discussions, and is made up of students from many course streams (e.g. Clinical, Health, Organisational, Neuropsychology etc.) and structures (Ma, PhD, Doctoral, Combined). Some recent highlights include presentations on the direction in which our department is developing (Professor Henry Jackson), the profiling of serial killers, a panel discussion on how to source financial support and a seminar on thesis writing.

Please note that people from all department faculties and the community are welcome to attend. Non-psychology students & professionals are also invited to present; we have recently had/have planned presentations from Anthropology and Commerce PhD students.

2007 Presentations - To be confirmed

Venue: Redmond Barry Building, Room 1005, from 4.15pm - 5.30pm unless otherwise stated.

How are the colloquia organised? Why isn't there a topic I'm interested in?

The colloquia are organised by a voluntary committee of students who are avoiding focussing upon their theses. As such, we come up with ideas for presentations and contact lecturers or professionals in the field who are happy to present. We are always looking for student representatives from across the department to identify topics of interest; the upcoming talks on how to organise a private practice and issues in child assessment. We also arbitrarily set the colloquium on Friday at 4.15pm; each day inconveniences some people and Fridays allow us to go out for drinks afterwards.

Help make our department better!

We are always looking for extra assistance. If you would like to help, you could turn up to one of the two committee meetings each semester (which involve having coffee at the Potter and coming up with talk ideas) or help set up the colloquium room one Friday. It is very easy, and looks good on your resume. We are always happy to receive emails, too.

If you would like to contact us, please do so by email!

The committee consists of :

Christopher Benjamin
Sarah Whittle
Kim Peters
James Canty
Christine Matthews
Sarah Buckley
Hunter Mulcare
Richard Moulding
Julian Dooley
