300-Level Subject Descriptions
Title: Psychology in Modern Society
In this subject, students will have an opportunity to consider the place of psychological knowledge in understanding features of modern society. Students will explore how their basic understandings of human behaviour can inform the solution of practical problems and develop an appreciation of the social implications and obligations that accompany applying psychological research. Specific attention will be given to examining the nature of psychological disorders and to understanding and evaluating the use of psychological measures including a variety of tests and surveys as they are applied in a range of social settings.
Title: Applied Psychology
In this subject, students will examine how psychology can be applied in the workplace. Principles, methods and techniques that have been developed to understand how people function in organizations and industrial settings will be introduced. The field of applied psychology includes a wide range of topics including motivation, selection, performance evaluation, human-computer interaction, job satisfaction, training, human abilities and skill acquisition, learning and instruction. Students will have the opportunity to explore a number of these topics in detail and to develop analytic skills related to practical workplace issues.
Title: Research Methods
In this subject, students acquire psychological research studies skills needed to undertake the design and analysis of basic psychological research. The subject builds on the competencies and understanding of statistical analysis and research methodology acquired in earlier level psychology studies, emphasizing particular design and measurement issues involved with research designs that include multiple independent variables. Topics will be selected from the nature of designed experiments; planned and post-hoc comparisons; the analysis of trend; statistical power and effect size; repeated measures designs; factorial experiments with mixed between-subjects and within-subjects treatment factors; and multiple regression. Analysis of multivariate data using factor analysis is also introduced.
