Studying Psychology at the University of Melbourne
Psychology is literally the scientific study of behaviour. As the discipline has developed over the last hundred years it has come to embrace a wide range of perspectives and approaches all having something to contribute to understanding behaviour, especially human behaviour. The Psychology Department in the School of Behavioural Science brings together specialists from the diverse interests that collectively are modern psychology. Their expertise makes study in this department a challenging and stimulating experience.
Research and teaching go hand in hand across all the department's areas of specialization. Our research teams address questions on topics as diverse as language processing, cognitive development, memory disorders, brain lateralization and everyday problem-solving. Many of our researchers are well-known internationally and are partners in research collaborations round the world. Students of this department can expect their lecturers to include the latest ideas, theories, and research findings into their teaching at all levels of both undergraduate and postgraduate subjects.
There is something in the study of psychology for every student whether they want to take it as a single subject, an undergraduate major, or at postgraduate level. The approach to thinking about behaviour, the theories of the nature and origins of particular forms of behaviour, the methods of data collection, analysis and interpretation, provide graduates who have studied psychology as part of an undergraduate major, with a range of skills that can be applied in diverse employment settings. Our postgraduate courses, both research and professional specializations, enable graduates to move into a variety of careers as professional psychologists.
