The University of Melbourne Psychology Clinic - Assessment and CounsellingPsychological assessment and counselling The Psychology Clinic offers low-cost psychological treatment to adults (aged over 18 years) in the general community. Counsellors at the Psychology Clinic are Post Graduate students who are enrolled in Masters programs in Clinical Psychology. All counsellors are registered as provisional psychologists and their practice is supervised by fully registered, experienced practitioners. Counselling can assist people to deal with difficult circumstances or to make positive changes in their lives. The University of Melbourne Psychology Clinic specialises in the treatment of anxiety and mood problems and disorders, but offers treatment wide range of psychological difficulties. Following the latest research into the management of these conditions, our most common interventions involve short-term (about 12–16 weeks) Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This approach to psychological problems is action-based and emphasises managing current difficulties. Clients are expected to be active participants in the treatment and will often be given out-of-session assignments as part of their behaviour change. Although the clinic specialises in working with psychological and psychiatric disorders, our therapeutic approach emphasises the client's strengths in achieving desired outcomes. There are no medical doctors on the staff of the clinic, and so we do not prescribe medication. However, in some cases, medication is one part of the optimal treatment program. The clinic has strong ties to a number of psychiatrists and general practitioners, and appropriate joint treatment can be readily organised. We have also developed a substantial network of counsellors, personal development programs and specialised agencies that we commonly refer clients on to. Some of the conditions commonly treated at the University of Melbourne Psychology Clinic are:
